In our next few articles, Dasi-Ziyad Family Institute will share with our readers some conversations from our relationship workshops
These conversations reflect some of the contemporary moods and sentiments of people about marriage, family and relationships.
“I told him if he didn’t think he was ready for marriage, then he wasn’t ready for me”, The pretty young lady said these words with a funny combination of regret and pride. We were facilitating a workshop with a group of young ladies, students at university and boy did they have a lot to say. Initially, we just listened and listened and listened. They talked about relationships and disappointment and the reality of managing your values and morals with your desires. It was an honest, heartfelt sharing and I, who am the educator, became the student.
Later, we shared some tools about communication and resolving conflicts. We did some exercises to clarify just what some of those values are. And we talked about identifying one’s purpose or mission in life or in relationships. This workshop is one of many that we have been presenting with teen-agers and young ladies. The good news is that there is an awakening in many young ladies. They want healthy relationships and they don’t want to compromise their value systems just to be in a relationship. They are wary; but not hopeless. Scared, vulnerable but not cynical. And they are willing, maybe even anxious to learn more and get relationship skills.
